Trekking the Captivating Kackar Trails

Trekking to the summit of Kaçkar Mountains

This one-week trip traverses the Kaçkar Mountain range’s high passes from north to south, with an optional ascent to Kaçkar’s peak (H: 3937m). For our summit ascent, we stay in pensions in the neighboring villages and tent in the high pastures.

Day 1Meeting at Trabzon Airport and Transfer

Your tour guide and driver will greet you when you arrive at Trabzon Airport. Depending on your arrival time, we can take a brief stroll or move directly to our dinner and overnight lodging in Çamlıhemşin (2 hours).

Day 2Karamolla – Palakçur (+900m / -900m)

After a 30-minute transfer, we begin our walk at Palakçur. The hike will culminate in Karamolla hamlet after crossing the mountain range from north to south through the Palakçur pass. From here, we’ll travel 30 minutes to a hotel in Yaylalar (Hevek) village for our supper and sleep.

Day 3Hiking : Yaylalar - Modut (+700m / -900m)

The hike today takes us from the pension into the forest, then up above the tree line to the summer hamlet of Modut. We then stroll to Mikelis and return to Yaylalar hamlet for an overnight stay at the same hotel (20 mins).

Day 4Hiking : Trek to base camp (+900m) (4 hours)

To prepare for the summit ascent, we travel to base camp. Mules will eat up all of our provisions. We pitch our tents and have the option of climbing to a nearby tiny mountain in the afternoon.

Dilberdüzü base camp (dinner and overnight) (H: 2900m).

Day 5Hiking : Kaçkar Summit (+1000m / -1000m)

Start early in the morning towards the highest mountain in the Kaçkar range. The hike follows a path until the last few hundred meters, when it nearly vanishes and we have to travel on rocks (no rock climbing is involved). It’s possible that short routes will be covered with snow.

For those who don’t want to tackle the summit, it’s also a wonderful day for day walks surrounding basecamp (to the cold Deniz Lake, for example). As on the previous day, camp at Dilberdüzü.

Day 6Hike : Dilberdüzü – Dobe (+300m / -400m)

This is a high-altitude hike across Pisovit pass with panoramic views of the Dilberdüzü valley. We descend into the next valley and set our camp in Dobe Valley (H: 2500m).

Dobe campground for dinner and the night.

Day 7Hike : Lanetleme - aymakçur & Ayder hot springs (+700m / -1100m)

We return to the north side of the mountain range through Lanetleme pass (H:3200m). We return to Ayder through the Aymakçur valley (H:2100m) and meet our car for the journey to Ayder, where we may rest in the hot spa. Then it’s on to Amlhemşin for our final meal and an overnight stay at the pension.

Day 8Departure : Transfer to Trabzon International Airport (2hrs).

Grade D: for experienced trekkers capable of maintaining a steady pace for at least 8 hours and tackling some easy scrambling.
